The Colección general de canciones españolas y americanas (Madrid, c. 1825)One of the major collections of Spanish songs of this period. The Colección general de canciones españolas y americanas published by Bartolomé Wirmbs in Madrid in about 1825 is one of the seriously important sources for the history of Spanish music and not available until now, of great interest to performers and to any institution which has a Hispanic program covering music. It is reproduced here in Hebe from a copy in the collection of the late Robert Spencer, by his kind permission, and (forthcoming) from a copy of the Segunda Colección which is in my own collection. The original collection is without date, but Celsa Alonso: La canción lírica española en el siglo XIX (Madrid, 1998), p. 95, cites an advertisement for a subscription to this publication in the Diario de Avisos in Madrid of 12 January 1825. The songs have alternative accompaniments for piano or for guitar, and they include some famous ones. They were sung at the highest level in Spain: Celsa Alonso (p. 90) cites a description dated 1831 of a performance of some of these songs in the presence of the King and Queen of Spain. The Colección is an important document in the history of Spanish song and I hope that its publication here may lead to more performances of this repertory today. The whole of the Colección is now available here in electronic form. Preface to the
